What do we see in this artwork?
This painting printed on canvas is one of the Chochungdo (초충도, 草蟲圖). Chochungdo (paintings of grass and insects) refers to Korean folk paintings featuring a combination of grass, insects, amphibious reptiles and more, each of which has its own meaning. This is a nature-themed painting whose meaning expresses a wish for literary spirit, wealth, longevity and fertility. It is a very broad subject area, ranging from literati paintings to popular images, and is highly regarded by all social classes.
Many Chochungdo paintings were created during China's Southern Song period (1127 to 1279). In Korea, many Chochungdo paintings are believed to date from this period, as many of the surviving Chochungdo works by Shinsaimdang (1504 to 1551) come from the early Joseon Dynasty. 『Gaejawonhwajeon, 개자원화전, 芥子園畵傳』 describes detailed methods for highly realistic painting, showing that she achieved great success in later generations.
The elements most commonly found in Chochungdo are cucumbers, pumpkins, grapes, eggplants, bellflowers, cockscombs, cherry blossoms, pinecones, poppies, wild herbs, hydrangeas, yellow and white chrysanthemums, twilight, wildflowers, frogs, toads, dragonflies and bees. Grass and worms are often depicted near butterflies, chicks, fireflies, cicadas, lizards, hedgehogs, bats and weasels. Hwajodo consists of tall trees, flowers, birds and so on, while Chochungdo includes small grasses and blossoms and small insects living in a close-knit community.
The overview of the Chochungdo method presented under the aforementioned title 『Gaejawonhwajeon, 개자원화전, 芥子園畵傳』 reads as follows: "When drawing a grass worm, the lively movements of flying and running must be expressed well. The shape of the grass worm can be long, short, large or small, and its color changes from time to time. In summer, when the grass and trees are growing, the insects should be green, and in autumn, when the grass and trees have taken on color, they should be dull. Grass worms are usually drawn with dots, with the spirit appearing first. While the heads are drawn first for grass worms, butterflies begin with the wings. To make the flowers shine more vividly, butterflies must be depicted in their surroundings. The wart is a small insect, yet it must be painted with dignity. Therefore, grass worms are very small creatures, but their form and spirit must be expressed sufficiently to bring out the meaning of the thrill".
