About this Painting: Moonlit Autumn Landscape
The painting “Moonlit Autumn Landscape” was created by the Korean Joseon-era painter Kim Du-ryang (1696–1763).
The inscription at the upper left edge of the painting – “Painted by Kim Du-ryang in the mid-autumn of the Gapja year” – makes it clear that the artist completed this work in the year 1744, during the traditional Chuseok Festival.
The scene opens to a quiet, moonlit autumn night. The large, round full moon rises clearly in the sky, giving the landscape a calm brightness. Under this light, nature is in transition: trees that have already lost their leaves, a mist-covered forest in the background, and the delicate chill of the season create an almost meditative atmosphere.
Despite the intense moonlight, the landscape appears restrained and still – as if capturing a moment of pause between summer and winter. The slight melancholy that autumn brings permeates the entire image.
Executed on paper, this work impressively shows the poetic expressiveness and precise brushwork of the Joseon era. Kim Du-ryang succeeds in capturing the mood of a single night in a way that feels timeless.
